Artevento Cervia 2026: The Sky Lights Up with the International Kite Festival
From April 23 to May 3, 2026, Pinarella beach in Cervia transforms into the natural stage for one of the most fascinating spectacles on the Romagna Riviera: Artevento, the International Kite Festival now in its 46th edition. As a tourist guide with experience in the Romagna territory, I bring you to discover this unique event that combines art, culture, tradition and spectacle in an extraordinary location between salt pans, pine forests and the sea.
A Record-Breaking Festival: The History of Artevento
Artevento is not simply a festival: it is the world’s longest-running International Kite Festival, held without interruption and under the same artistic direction since 1981. Forty-five years of passion, art and dedication that have made Cervia the world capital of kites.
The numbers speak clearly: 800,000 total visitors, 250 guest artists from 50 countries across five continents, over 107,000 registered hotel stays and almost 870,000 vehicle accesses during the event. An international success that has led authoritative publications such as Drachen Foundation, Huffington Post and USA Today to define Artevento as one of the best kite festivals in the world and the most important international observatory on wind art.
Brother Wind: The Themes of the 2026 Edition
The 2026 edition of Artevento develops around four cardinal themes, all linked by the claim “Brother Wind,” celebrating important anniversaries and profound intercultural dialogues.
The 800 Years Since the Death of Saint Francis
The first theme pays homage to Saint Francis of Assisi on the eight hundredth anniversary of his death, highlighting the Canticle of Creatures. A universal message of harmony, respect for nature, for the planet and for all its creatures that perfectly matches the festival’s philosophy.
Grazia Deledda: The Poetess of the Wind
The second theme celebrates the 100 years since the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded in 1926 to Sardinian poetess Grazia Deledda, considered the “poetess of the wind.” A tribute to Italian literature and its ability to sing the natural elements.
The Italy-Japan Twinning
The festival celebrates the 40th anniversary of the twinning between the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan, renewing an intercultural dialogue founded on the ancient kite tradition. A bond of friendship consolidated over 40 years between Artevento, the Japan Kite Association and the Tako No Hakubutsukan Museum in Tokyo.
Contemporary Circus
Completing the thematic framework is the collaboration with ATER Foundation and contemporary circus, with the Flying Circus Arena hosting live performances for adults and children within the Festival Village on the beach.
The Hague Air Gallery: When the Kite Becomes Canvas
One of the most interesting novelties of the 2026 edition is the early opening of the thematic exhibition, inaugurated on April 4 at the Magazzino del Sale Torre in Cervia. “The Hague Air Gallery – Painted Wind” is an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to the Netherlands and the kite collection born from an original idea by Gerard van der Loo and Els Lubbers in the late 1980s.
The kite transforms into a canvas on which visual artists from different schools create their works, imagining the sky as an art gallery. Twenty Japanese-model kites are on display, equipped with 17 retention cables 30 meters long each, painted by Dutch artists from the most diverse expressive currents. A project with the patronage of the Embassy and Consulate General of the Netherlands and the curatorial work of Caterina Capelli, Art Director of Artevento.
The Spectacular Events on Pinarella Beach
The beating heart of the festival takes place on Pinarella beach, at the southern gates of the Po Delta Park, in an enchanting location between salt pans, pine forest and sea. Over 200 invited artists from more than 50 countries join 2,000 spontaneous international participants, including masters custodians of ancient traditions, professional wind designers, original performers and champions of acrobatic kites.
The Flag Ceremony
The official opening of the event is entrusted to the traditional Flag Ceremony, a symbolic moment that kicks off the ten days of spectacle.
Flight of the Giants
Monumental kites rise in the sky of Cervia, fantastic creatures and spectacular shapes that leave adults and children amazed. An aerial ballet that defies the laws of physics with grace and majesty.
Acrobatic Kite Ballets
Professional acrobatic kite pilots perform choreographies to music, transforming the sky into a synchronized dance of colors and movements. The Cervia’s Cup, Italian Acrobatic Flight Championship organized by STACK Italia, brings the best national talents to the stage.
The Parade of Creatures
The highlight of the festival is a joyful collective and immersive celebration of the wonder of nature, in homage to the Franciscan spirit. Jellyfish, whales, frogs, chameleons, snails, birds and giant butterflies worn as puppets dialogue with the flight of kites, transforming the Festival Village into a Wonderland.
The Wind Gardens
A permanent exhibition on the beach presents sound installations and wind sculptures created by international designers. Oversized flowers, jellyfish, colored hearts and anthropomorphic creations, all rigorously original, create a magical atmosphere by the sea.
The Night of Miracles
On May 2, the festival’s most magical event takes place: the night flight of kites combines with performances of dance, music and lights, creating an unforgettable show under the stars. A poetic moment that enchants visitors of all ages.

Culture, Education and Entertainment
Artevento is much more than a show: it is a complete cultural project that embraces multiple dimensions.
Music, Theater and Dance
The program includes music, theater and dance performances with delegations from the East and young ensemble music orchestras. Cultural diversity finds artistic expression in every corner of the festival.
Workshops and Training
Educational workshops for children and courses for adults allow everyone to approach the world of kites, learning ancient and modern techniques. An educational opportunity that combines manual skills, creativity and knowledge of traditions.
Contemporary Circus
The Flying Circus Arena hosts contemporary circus performances that integrate acrobatics, aerial performances and artistic storytelling, offering quality entertainment for the whole family.
Cinema du Desert
A 2026 novelty is the solar-powered mobile cinema that combines the evocative nature of outdoor film screenings with the importance of educational and social films. Sustainability and culture meet on Artevento beach.
Conferences and Round Tables
Presentations and debates on environmental themes, nature, equality, integration, accessibility and peace enrich the program with reflective and in-depth content.
The Kite Museum: A Unique Heritage
Artevento was the driving force behind the birth of the Kite Museum, based on the collection grown since 1981 alongside the festival. An exhibition and educational project of exceptional value that has attracted the interest of the ICPI of the Ministry of Culture.
Since 2023, the Ministry of Culture has identified Artevento’s activities as a garrison safeguarding kite traditions from around the world, dedicating a project developed in collaboration with the DEA Specialization School of the University of Perugia, entitled “Protection and safeguarding of traditional heritage knowledge and practices of living witnesses at risk of disappearing.”
The Museum is a member of AIMSC Italian Association of Print and Paper Museums and represents a cultural heritage unparalleled in the world dedicated to wind art.
One Sky One World: The Peace Festival
Artevento also organizes in October the Kites for Peace Festival “One Sky One World,” in collaboration with the PerugiAssisi Foundation. An environmental education and sustainable development project that promotes care for the planet and a language of peace and interculture through collective artistic practices.
As the festival’s motto states: “Flying toward a future colored with all the hues of the rainbow.” A great declaration of love for the planet and a spectacular message of peace.
The Wind Fair and Food Area
On the beach there is the Wind Fair, with the specialized kite and wind games market, where enthusiasts and curious visitors can purchase kites of all types, from traditional models to the most innovative contemporary creations.
The food & beverage area offers local products and Romagna specialties, allowing visitors to taste the region’s gastronomic tradition while enjoying the kite spectacle.
2026 Guest of Honor: The Bimana Collective
The 2026 edition has as exceptional guest of honor the artistic collective Bimana, from Colombia. A presence that further enriches the festival’s international panorama with South American art and creativity.
