RAVENNA BY NIGHT is back!

This year I can’t wait to show you once again a magical Ravenna by night, and like every summer you will find the night guided tours itinerary through the most significant monuments of Ravenna’s mosaic. Every Tuesday and Friday it will be possible to visit this enchanting UNESCO heritage monuments from 9 to 11 p.m: you will see the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, two treasures of extraordinary beauty.

It’s always a joy to share with you some really exciting and enthralling moments through my organised tours, prepared with a special attention to details so that you can pick up the several subliminal messages that are hidden inside the wonderful byzantine basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Our itinerary will be a walking tour around the historical center of Ravenna and will be a real full-immersion into the city’s paleochristian art and history.

After a short historical introduction our tour will begin with the Basilica of San Vitale, one of the finest examples of byzantine art in Italy and around the world. It is also called “the little Saint Sophia”, for the many similarities with the Church of Istanbul, which is nine times bigger than San Vitale and dates back to the mid-4th century. Ravenna is a real crossroad of people and cultures that have enriched the city by leaving their testimonies, thanks to which it has been nominated as a capital for three times. Here the strong byzantine influences are evident both in the architecture and iconography of internal decorations.

Right behind the basilica, in one of the most beautiful corners of the byzantine city you can find the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia: a rare architectural gem of extraordinary beauty that is able to surprise the visitors, first deceiving them with the simplicity of its external structure, and then leaving them amazed by the complexity and richness of the mosaic masterpieces that they find on the inside. Just think that its famous starry sky has inspired the american singer Cole Porter for his song “Night and Day”.

The night guided tours offer the chance to visit monuments out of the daytime heat. During the night,  paradoxically, the absence of natural light brings out the glitz of the ancient mosaic decorations: in these days the stars of the Mausoleum’s roof mosaics shine more than the ones of Ravenna’s sky. Our tour will continue until the Tomb of the poet Dante Alighieri, with a stopover in Piazza del Popolo…where you will also be able to taste a very good homemade ice cream.

It is also possible to organize personalized guided tours for individuals, small or large groups, also open ones. Kids will be gifted with a funny gadget at the end of the evening. BOOK your tour now! Giustiniano and Teodora are waiting to show you all their magnificence!!
